Montenegro expects to receive invitation to join NATO on Dec 1

Author: Vojo Micak
PODGORICA, Nov 3 (Hina) - Montenegro expects to receive an invitation to join NATO at a meeting of alliance foreign ministers in Brussels on December 1 and 2, Pobjeda newspaper said on Tuesday.

The newspaper said that already on the first day of the meeting it would be known whether the NATO foreign ministers would reach a consensus and invite Montenegro to join the alliance as the 29th member.

The authorities in Podgorica estimate that Montenegro has the support of all key NATO members, including the United States and the United Kingdom, with the exception of France which has not yet made its position clear.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and the 28 members of the North Atlantic Council visited Podgorica in mid-October to assess progress in key areas. He said on that occasion that Montenegro had made significant progress in reforms, especially in the rule of law, and added that both Montenegro and NATO would benefit from the country's accession to the Euro-Atlantic family.

The latest public opinion survey conducted by Damar agency shows that 45% of Montenegrins support their country's NATO membership bid, while 37% are against.
