Sweden offering Croatia Gripen combat aircraft

Author: Roberta Mlinarić
ZAGREB, Oct 26 (Hina) - Sweden has offered Croatia 8 to 12 new Gripen combat jets, the Swedish Defence and Security Export Agency (FXM) has said in its reply to a request for information related to the purchase of new military aircraft sent to it by the Croatian Defence Ministry in June, the FXM said on Monday.
On Friday, October 23 this Swedish government agency responded to the Croatian ministry's request for information on military aircraft to be sold to the Croatian Air Force, offering the Gripen jets, manufactured by SAAB.

Sweden has had a constructive dialogue with Croatia since 2007 and considers Croatia a valuable future partner in the region where Gripen jets are already in use by some countries, the FXM said.

Gripen jets are used by the Czech Republic, Hungary, Sweden, South Africa and Thailand. Brazil recently ordered 36 jets and negotiations with Slovakia are under way.

This type of aircraft has been presented to the Croatian public several times. It is a multi-purpose combat jet among potential candidates that are to replace Croatia's overhauled MiG-21 jets that have been in use since the 1991-95 war.

The Croatian media have mentioned as a possible replacement for the MiG jets also used U.S. F16 jets with Israeli modifications, the European Eurofighter jet, the French Rafale, and the South Korean F 50 combat jet.
