Over 250,000 migrants recorded entering Croatia since mid-Sep

Author: Marija Šestan
ZAGREB, Oct 25 (Hina) - From Saturday midnight until Sunday afternoon, 6,166 migrants and refugees crossed into Croatia from Serbia, which has increased the overall statistics to over 250,000 passing through Croatia since mid-September when Hungary sealed its border with Serbia, thus re-routing refugees towards Croatia.

As soon as migrants cross the Serbia-Croatia frontier, they are bussed to the Opatovac reception centre and afterwards those Western Europe-bound refugees are transported by bus or by train towards the border with Slovenia.

Areas where migrants and refugees are provided with temporary shelter and other necessities are covered with leftover food and used blankets, and an activist who works for "Doctors  Without Borders" on Sunday warned that scattered litter might trigger off outbreaks of contagious infections.

Doctor Vladimir Andric, who warned about health risks stemming from the huge waste, told reporters in Berkasovo, the Serbian border town near Croatia, that migrants arriving there were completely exhausted and that they wanted, nevertheless, to continue travelling towards western Europe as soon as possible.

Waste in the area is being removed by local utilities' workers, Czech volunteers as well as by prisoners from the nearby jail in Sremska Mitrovica, who are engaged in this task on a voluntary basis, too.
