Slovenia suspends train traffic with Croatia

Author: Ivana Tomičić Šušak
LJUBLJANA, Oct 17 (Hina) - Slovenia has suspended regular train traffic with Croatia in anticipation of the influx of migrants wishing to reach western Europe.
The Slovenian Railways company on Friday evening discontinued indefinitely railway traffic with Croatia, at the request of the Slovenia state authorities, following Croatia's announcement that it would start sending migrants to Slovenia given that Hungary was sealing off its border towards Croatia, the Slovenian news agency STA reported.

Slovenia opted for the same measure a month ago when the first migrant wave started and the suspension lasted several weeks.

The flow of people is expected to shift to Slovenia after Hungary closed its border with Croatia for migrants at midnight Friday.

Slovenian Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec said that earlier on Friday he had spoken with Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz and that he had said that Austria would not impose special controls on its border as long as Germany was taking in migrants.
"If Germany closes its borders, Slovenia will consider changing its policy on the transit of migrants. We are ready for new waves and have secured logistical support for that," the Slovenian foreign minister said.

At the same time, Slovenian Opposition leader and former prime minister Janez Jansa released the following tweet on his Twitter account. "Hungary is closing the border with Croatia, we call on the Slovenian government to adopt the same measure".

After Croatia announced that following Hungary's decision to seal off its border with Croatia it would re-direct migrants to Slovenia, Slovenian Civil Protection commander Srecko Sestan said the country is prepared to take in 5,000 migrants at the most.

Slovenia has said it will accept the arrivals, but wants to control the influx.
