20 Croatian publishers to attend Frankfurt Book Fair on Oct 14-18

Author: Roberta Mlinarić
ZAGREB, Sept 18 (Hina) - About 20 Croatian publishers will be presenting their books at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 14-18, the Culture Ministry said on Friday.

Book launches and presentations at the Croatian pavilion at the fair will include a presentation of the book "Smijeh slobode - Uvod u Feral Tribune" (The Laughter of Freedom - An Introduction to Feral Tribune, unofficial translation ) by journalist Boris Pavelic, published by the Rijeka-based publisher Adamic. The book is about the history of the Croatian satirical weekly "Feral Tribune" which first hit the newsstands in 1984 as a supplement in the Slobodna Dalmacija daily and became a weekly newspaper in 1993. It ceased existing in 2008.

The book, which has become very popular in Croatia, is becoming increasingly interesting to the international public as well because its "laughter of freedom" is what has made Feral Tribune well known around Europe, the Ministry said.

Just before the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Frankfurter Rundschau daily will publish a supplement dedicated to Feral Tribune, featuring excerpts from the book translated into German, a chronology of the weekly and articles by some of the most influential journalists of that newspaper. The book will be presented on October 15 by its author and the Feral Tribune founders and journalists Viktor Ivancic, Boris Dezulovic and Predrag Lucic.

On the same day the three journalists will attend a panel at the Senckenberg museum on the topic of freedom and satire in times of war and nationalism.

On October 17, a magazine on the cultural life of the Croat emigrant community in Germany, Das Wort, will be presented at the Frankfurt fair.
