Remediation of dumpsite west of Zagreb under way

Author: Snježana Pezer
SAMOBOR, Sept 9 (Hina) - Remediation works valued at HRK 65 million were launched on Wednesday at the Trebez waste disposal site near the town of Samobor on the western outskirts of Zagreb with 85% of the funds required being secured from European Union (EU) funds and 15% from Croatia's Environment Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund.
That means that the local community will not pay anything for this project, Environment and Nature Protection Minister Mihael Zmajlovic said after inspecting the site. "This is important for all Samobor residents and in the surrounding area and will contribute to the quality of life," the minister said.

He added that with the introduction of a holistic approach to waste management, all waste disposal sites in Croatia would be remediated and 13 new centres would be built for which an amount of five billion kuna has been secured.  "This will save energy and raw materials and preserve the environment and create new, green jobs," he added.

Samobor Mayor Kresimir Beljak thanked the ministry and environment protection fund for recognising the value of this project, particularly since the site is close to a water pump site.

Director of the environment protection fund Sven Muller said that works planned for the Trebez site should be completed by mid next year and that the state was aiming to remediate all waste disposal sites in the country by the end of 2018.
