The Croatian ship, which accepted 124 children, 58 women and 123 men, is currently on its way to Sicily, where the rescued people are to be left.
The ship's crew, who joined Operation Triton on August 1, already on the second day of their participation in the operation rescued 37 people at sea, while a few days later, together with the Swedish vessel "Poseidon", it participated in a rescue of 476 migrants.
The latest report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shows that since January this year, around 224,000 migrants have entered Europe via the Mediterranean, of whom 98,000 have arrived in Italy and 124,000 in Greece. More than 2,100 have lost their lives while trying to reach Europe.
According to information from the Italian Coast Guard, more than 1,000 migrants travelling in unsafe vessels were rescued in several separate operations in the Mediterranean last weekend.
Operation Triton, requested by the Italian authorities, was launched in the central Mediterranean on 1 November 2014 to control and protect EU borders at sea and rescue migrants.
The Andrija Mohorovicic, which has a crew of 49 members of the Croatian Armed Forces and five border police officers, will participate in the operation until the end of October. Croatia is one of 27 EU countries which participate in the mission by deploying their personnel and technical equipment.
