Final practice held for Victory Day parade

Author: vmic
ZAGREB, Aug 1 (Hina) - Croatian Army infantry and mechanised units on Saturday held a final practice for a parade that will be held in Zagreb on August 4 to mark the 20th anniversary of Operation Storm, a combined military and police offensive that crushed a Serb armed insurgency in August 1995 and restored Croatian sovereignty over occupied central and southern parts of the country.

The greatest attraction of the parade are two PzH 2000 howitzers, each weighing 50 tonnes, which will be displayed on the parade day. They did not participate in the practice, but only their transporters. The two state-of-the-art artillery pieces have a range of between 30 and 80 kilometres and can fire 10-13 rounds per minute.

The practice also featured Patria armoured vehicles, MRAP (mine-resistant ambush protected) vehicles, Humvees, M-84 tanks, BVP M-80 infantry fighting vehicles, Iveco trucks, mortars, medical vehicles, M-ATV off-road fighting vehicles, a mobile field kitchen, various vessels, motorcycles and other vehicles and equipment.

Army personnel, police, firefighters, National Protection and Rescue Directorate and Croatian Mountain Rescue Service personnel, Homeland War veterans and historical units marched along the streets where the practice was held. Special forces and Air Force and Air Defence personnel were also there.

About 20 aircraft will take part in the August 4 event, including MiG-21, Canadair, Pilatus, MI-8 MTV and Bell helicopters.

A dress rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday.

Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Drago Lovric told the press that all servicemen and women take great pride in celebrating the 20th anniversary of Operation Storm, Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Croatian Veterans' Day, which are all observed on August 5. He said that the day will be marked with dignity both in Zagreb, on August 4, and in Knin, on August 5.
