Merten said that in addition to him and the U.S. Defence Attache, the United States planned to send two U.S. generals to attend the August 4th parade in Zagreb.
He added that with this statement he would like to clarify recent media reports regarding U.S. participation in Croatia's Victory and Homeland Gratitude Day commemorations.
"...This level of attendance is significantly higher than U.S. attendance at previous Victory Day events and should unquestionably be viewed as what it is — an important reflection of the strength of the U.S.-Croatian friendship and partnership, and of our long-standing and ironclad support for Croatia's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity," the statement read.
The ambassador said the U.S. was pleased to participate as Croatia marked this important day for the country.
"The inclusion in the parade of U.S.-provided MRAP vehicles and the concurrent successful completion of our $30 million contract with the Victor Lenac shipyard to refit the USS Mt. Whitney are further demonstrations of our robust and enduring partnership with Croatia, a valued and close ally of the United States," the statement said.
