18th Motovun Film Festival to take place on 25-29 June

Author: vmic
ZAGREB, July 2 (Hina) - The 18th Motovun Film Festival will take place from 25 to 29 July and this year the focus will be on French cinema and culture, organisers announced at a press conference in Zagreb on Thursday.

The programme was presented by the festival's director, Igor Mirkovic, who said that over 100 films would be screened this year, of which 19 are in the main programme.

"Again we are offering a lot in a very short time so that people who come to Motovun can enjoy as many different attractions as possible," Mirkovic said, recalling that the aim of the festival is to draw attention to small cinematographies and independent productions which find it increasingly hard to make it to the cinemas and ordinary viewers.

Since this year's festival is taking place as part of the French Rendez-vous festival in Croatia, special emphasis will be placed on French films and culture. "First of all, there will be a retrospective called the Brutal French with a selection of films by authors which at the turn of the century were often referred to as New French Extremity -- Bruno Dumont, Leos Carax Francois Ozon, Gaspar Noe and others," Mirkovic said.

Selector Milena Zajovic said that this year's festival brings a mix of films coming from major international festivals, highly acclaimed films by well-known authors, and "as usual a lot of small films which usually go unnoticed and which we believe will have a great future."

Speaking of the main programme, she singled out The Postman's White Nights (Russia), Magical Girl (Spain), Virgin Mountain (Iceland) and The Lobster (Ireland).
