Agreements inked to fund 26 island projects

Author: spez
SPLIT, May 26 (Hina) - The Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds is to provide co-financing of almost HRK 16 million for 26 island projects and Deputy Prime Minister Branko Grcic on Tuesday signed agreements in that regard with the relevant island officials.

The projects are part of the "Developing Adriatic Islands" programme.

Applications for funding were submitted by 77 island municipalities and towns, with 26 projects selected that refer to construction, modernisation, repair, reconstruction, adaptation and refurbishment of the communal, social, public, business and tourism infrastructure.

The selection criteria, Regional Development and EU Funds Minister Grcic said, were transparent and required that all aspects of the programme be met. This is a small but significant contribution to the development of municipalities and towns on the islands, Grcic said.

According to Grcic, the state allocates around HRK 1.5 billion for the islands each year and most of this is earmarked to develop transport connections. The state subsidises ship and ferry fares and some capital investment projects too, in an effort to improve the quality of life on the islands, he said.

The maximum amount granted for each project is HRK 2 million and municipal or town authorities are required to contribute at least 10 percent of the investment.
