Bosnia hit by brain drain of medical professionals

Author: mses
SARAJEVO, May 6 (Hina) - A growing number of physicians and nurses are leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina in search for better paid jobs abroad and the most favourable destinations for their new employment are European Union member-states such as Germany as well as Slovenia and Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina's medical association has warned.

The association's chairman, Harun Drljevic, told the Dnevni Avaz daily on Wednesday that over the last two years, between 250-300 doctors had moved out of Bosnia seeking better working conditions and a higher pay abroad.

According to Drljevic, the process of Bosnian doctors leaving for Germany has been accelerated since Germany abolished additional tests for foreign medical professionals who previously needed to go through a national German procedure to get their academic degree or diploma recognised in that country,

Germany abolished that procedure in light of the fact that a rising number of German physicians have been going to Scandinavian countries.

Drljevic was quoted as saying that by some estimates by 2020, Germany will need at least 20,000 foreign healthcare professionals, including physicians.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the average monthly salary of a medical resident is EUR 650.
