After the candidacy of Varazdin and nine partner cities was submitted at the Culture Ministry on Friday, the town authorities today presented their candidacy by organising the event dedicated to Ireland because an Irish city will share with a Croatian city the title of the 2020 European Capital of Culture.
A part of a town street was closed to traffic and a turf lawn was laid there, turning it into a 'green oasis'.
Also visiting Varazdin today was Irish Ambassador to Croatia Tim Harrington, who said that it was his first visit to the city and that he loved the idea of turning a local street into Ireland for one day.
Harrington said he was sure that Varazdin would be representing Croatia well in 2020 and that whichever Croatian city was chosen, it would cooperate well with Ireland's European Capital of Culture.
Later in the day, local artists will join in the Irish Day programme, visitors will be able to taste Irish stew and in the evening the Patrick Walker Trio will be performing traditional Irish music.
