The European Union's Official Gazette on 14 April reported that the Commission registered the Krk prosciutto, that is "Krcki Prsut", under the status of the protection of geographical indications.
The Zuzic plant applied for this status in April 2010.
This type of prosciutto is a preserved dry-cured meat product made from pork ham, dry-salted with sea salt and spices, air-dried without smoking and then dried and matured for a minimum of one year.
The production of Krk Prosciutto is limited to the northern Croatian Adriatic island of Krk.
The procedure for granting the PGI status for olive oil from the island of Cres and for the pickled cabbage from the area of Ogulin, western Croatia, is under way.
