"Krcki Prsut" prosciutto given PDI status in EU

Author: mses
ZAGREB, April 14 (Hina) - Croatia has been awarded the protected geographical indication (PGI) status for prosciutto produced by the "Zuzic" butchery on the island of Krk, and the Croatian agriculture ministry stated on Tuesday that this Krk prosciutto was the first Croatian product to be registered and protected on the single EU market under this brand.

The European Union's Official Gazette on 14 April reported that the Commission registered the Krk prosciutto, that is "Krcki Prsut", under the status of the protection of geographical indications.

The Zuzic plant applied for this status in April 2010.

This type of prosciutto is a preserved dry-cured meat product made from pork ham, dry-salted with sea salt and spices, air-dried without smoking and then dried and matured for a minimum of one year.

The production of Krk Prosciutto is limited to the northern Croatian Adriatic island of Krk.

The procedure for granting the PGI status for olive oil from the island of Cres and for the pickled cabbage from the area of Ogulin, western Croatia, is under way.
