Croatian pupils are amongst the few who attend school dressed as they choose, whereas the majority of European countries has introduced compulsory uniforms.
More than half of those polled in Croatia, namely 53%, said they supported the idea of introducing school uniforms in primary and secondary schools.
One of the respondents said that introducing uniforms had positive aspects - "The sooner the better, for parents because of less costs, for children because of reduced violence, for teachers because children will be focussed on what is important."
According to another respondent, uniforms were necessary due to the difference in the socio-economic status of pupils and because some children and their parents simply don't know what appropriate dress for school is.
Other respondents said that "girls should be allowed to wear trousers to ensure equality in society, which would help avoid sexist views of women."
Forty-two percent of respondents opposed the introduction of uniforms, citing the need to protect freedom of expression. Dress culture has to exist and strict codes aren't necessary, some said.
They believe that differences will exist despite wearing uniforms and there will always be those who will stand out.
