In Croatia, lights were switched off in landmarks of several Croatian cities including Pula's Arena amphitheatre, Dubrovnik's Walls, Split's Diocletian Palace, Osijek's bridges, and central squares of Cakovec, Daruvar, Ilok, Krk, Labin, Makarska, Metkovic, Nasice, Vinkovci etc.
In the capital of Zagreb, the Catholic Cathedral, European Square, hotels and business offices were "plunged into darkness" during the one-hour campaign.
Last Wednesday, the head of the Croatian Earth Hour drive, Petra Boic Petrac, said that the campaign, which had been organised for nine years, was designed to make people around the globe aware of the harm caused by climate change and encourage them to take action so as to reduce it.
Around the globe, landmarks including Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, Paris's Eiffel Tower, London's Big Ben, Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue, Moscow's Kremlin were plunged into darkness during the worldwide event, whose tagline for this year's campaign was "Change Climate Change."
