Mogherini visiting Serbia

Author: rmli
BELGRADE, March 27 (Hina) - Normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina and the implementation of their agreements are the main topics of talks to be held by European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and Serbian officials during her visit to Belgrade which started on Friday with the EU official meeting separately President Tomislav Nikolic, Parliament Speaker Maja Gojkovic and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic.

Mogherini arrived in Belgrade from Pristina, where she met on Thursday with senior Kosovo officials, saying that 2015 was an important year for Kosovo because this summer Kosovo would sign a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU. She also commended further normalisation of relations and direct contacts Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo PM Isa Mustafa had had in the meantime.

Mogherini's visit came a month and a half after Belgrade and Pristina reached an agreement on justice at the last round of talks held in Brussels.

Commenting on that agreement, Mogherini said in Pristina that its implementation had started appropriately, with the publishing of job vacancies for prosecutors and judges.

In an interview with the Belgrade press, Mogherini dismissed claims that the EU was "letting Serbia off lightly" with regard to internal reforms because of Belgrade's readiness to have the issue of Kosovo resolved.

Serbia should be implementing its reform agenda, Mogherini told the Danas daily, underlining that it was Serbia's clear obligation and contribution.

Reform implementation is important in the process of getting closer to the EU, but also for the country itself. Economic, social and political reforms must be implemented without delay and there is no getting off lightly in that regard, Mogherini said.

Later in the day Mogherini was expected to meet with Serbian PM Aleksandar Vucic, after which a joint news conference was to be held.

The EU official was also expected to hold a lecture for Belgrade University students.

According to estimates by local political analysts, by visiting Belgrade and Pristina, Mogherini wants to encourage both sides to consistently implement their agreements and intensify their cooperation.
