Croatia marks 250 years of forest management

Author: mses
ZAGREB, March 18 (Hina) - Forests and forest land cover nearly 47% of Croatia's land area, and 95% of the forests are of natural origin, with 260 indigenous tree species, representatives of the state-run Croatian forest management company said at a conference marking 250 years of organised forestry in the country.

"Forests, water and land are the country's natural resources and they will never be subject to sale," Agriculture Minister Tihomir Jakovina said at the conference in Zagreb.

Forests and forest land cover an area of 2.68 million hectares. Of that, 78% is owned by the state and 22% is privately-owned.

Croatia has been awarded the international FSC certificate for meeting standards in sustainable forest management.
