The data was compiled in line with the European System of National and Regional Accounts (ESA 2010) methodology which replaced the ESA 95 methodology and has been in force since September 2014. Due to the methodology change, the DZS had to revise a series of data, providing statistics for the period from 2000 to 2012.

Expressed in current prices, the national GDP in 2012 amounted to HRK 330.46 billion, down 0.6% from 2011, and expressed in euros, it totalled 43.96 billion, down 1.7% on the year.

The continental part of the country - the city of Zagreb and 13 counties - accounted for slightly less than 70% of GDP or HRK 30.03 billion, while the seven coastal counties accounted for slightly more than 30% of GDP or 13.93 billion.

Broken down by county, statistics show that Zagreb accounts for one-third of all economic activity. The capital city's GDP in 2012 totalled HRK 110.3 billion or EUR 14.67 billion, a share of 33.4% in the national GDP, while Lika-Senj County had the lowest GDP, of HRK 2.8 billion or EUR 388 million, a share of 0.9% in the national GDP.

GDP per capita in Zagreb was EUR 18,506, or 79.7% above the national average.

Only two other counties, both coastal, had a GDP per capita that was above the national average - Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, with EUR 13,110, 27.3% above the national average, and Istria County, with a GDP per capita of EUR 12,677, 23.1% above the national average.

The lowest GDP per capita was registered in Brod-Posavina County, EUR 5,853, 43.2% under the national average, followed by Vukovar-Srijem County, with EUR 5,996 or 41.8% less than the national average, and Pozega-Slavonija County with EUR 6,101 or 40.7% less than the national average.
