Bosnian Presidency against exporting arms, military equipment to Ukraine

Author: half
SARAJEVO, Feb 11 (Hina) - The Bosnian Presidency on Wednesday voiced its opposition to a possible delivery of weapons or military equipment to Ukraine, concluding that a solution to the Ukrainian crisis could be found only through political means.

The Presidency was responding to discussions in the wake of an announcement that ammunition would be exported to Ukraine based on a contract signed by the Sarajevo-based Unis company.

The company had earlier asked for consent from the Foreign Trade Ministry's to carry out the EUR 5 million contract. Former Minister Boris Tucic would not give his consent and resigned as a result, explaining that he had been exposed to political pressure over this matter. Unis accused him of obstructing a business deal, saying this could undermine Bosnia and Herzegovina's military industry which is one of the country's few profitable industries.

The Presidency said the export of arms and military equipment to Ukraine at this moment was not in the country's foreign policy interest "because it isn't conducive to regional security, stability and current international diplomatic efforts to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis in Ukraine."

In another statement, the Presidency said the Ukrainian crisis could be solved only by peaceful and democratic means, through political dialogue and negotiations, while fully respecting international law.

The Presidency supports the peace initiative of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, calling on all actors to constructively engage in the political and diplomatic dialogue and negotiations to reach a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
