Re-enactment of "1573 Peasant Revolt" to be held in Donja Stubica

Author: spez
ZAGREB, Feb 4 (Hina) - The Society of Knights of the Gold Chalice of Gornja Stubica and the tourist board in that northwest town of Croatia are organising a recreation of the Peasants' Revolt, which will involve 250 stuntmen dressed in medieval costumes as feudalists and peasants armed with swords, cannons, pitch forks, spears and other weaponry to stage "the battle of all battles" just as it was back in 1573.

"This is the seventh such event which has emerged from a modest beginning and grown into an international event involving societies from Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Hungary. Last year there were around 6,500 visitors and this year that number could be more than 10,000 and we are eagerly waiting for them," Krapina-Zagorje County Prefect Zeljko Kolar told a press conference on Tuesday.

This traditional gathering of serfs following their leader will start in front of Matije Gubac's home (the leader of the peasant revolt in 1573) and will move on toward the battle field.

In addition to the battle of the serfs, there will be a traditional fair to present old trades and crafts and artisanry products with a wide selection of culinary delights. Guests may also visit the museum dedicated to the Peasant Revolt, the director of the Donja Stubica tourist board Kornelija Vnucec said.

Differing to 1573, this modern revolt will end with an "after party" for all those interested.

Trains from Zagreb will be available at promotional fares.
