Ploce voting in referendum on construction of thermal power plant

Author: half
PLOCE, Jan 25 (Hina) - The turnout by 3pm in Sunday's referendum at which the residents of the southern seaport of Ploce were voting for or against the construction of a coal-fueled thermal power plant in their town was 40.97%, with activist Ana Musa voicing confidence the turnout would exceed 50% by 7pm, when polling stations close.

The turnout must exceed 50% for this local referendum to be valid. The referendum is not binding but those objecting to the power plant project hope that if enough people take part in the referendum, this will send a strong message to the government.

Musa said this referendum was a watershed showing how the people could defeat the power-wielders and defend their homes.

Ploce Mayor Kresimir Vejic was also optimistic about the outcome, telling Hina citizens must state their opinion.

The project to build the 800 MW power plant in Ploce port's industrial zone was initiated by Luka Ploce Energija, a daughter company of the Luka Ploce port. The Economy Ministry has supported the project.

The investors are still unknown. According to unofficial reports, negotiations and the search for a partner will be launched only after administrative obstacles have been dealt with.

Dubrovnik-Neretva County has said it is against the power plant project and thousands of people have attended two rallies against it in Ploce already. The town council adopted a declaration against the project last October. The declaration said citizens would be invited to vote on the matter in a referendum.
