Croatia ready to prevent terrorist attacks, says interior minister

Author: half
ZAGREB, Jan 8 (Hina) - Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic and Deputy Foreign Minister Josko Klisovic said on Thursday that Croatia was ready to prevent a terrorist attack like the one in Paris yesterday.

"Croatia is not immune to a possible terrorist attack, but we have the answer to that - we are systematically fighting against it," Ostojic told reporters ahead of a government session.

He said that a weapons supply chain was broken in Varazdin three days ago and that the weapons were certainly intended for terrorists or organised criminals. He added that a similar operation was carried out in Split-Dalmatia County. "That's our contribution to the fight against terrorism and one can't give up."

"I repeat, far from it that Croatia can't be a target. It can, we are preparing for that, we are part of the anti-terrorism coalition and what Croatia is doing is right," Ostojic said.

He extended his condolences to the Paris attack victims' families. "Unfortunately, there will be more such events, but there's no withdrawing."

Since the Paris attackers returned to France from Syria, where they fought for Islamic State, reporters asked if there were Croatian citizens in Syria. Ostojic said he had no information that people from Croatia fought for Islamic State there.

He stressed that the Islamic community was extremely well-incorporated in Croatian society and that it condemned any form of terrorism, which he said was the best way in which one could help Croatia and the Islamic faithful.

Klisovic also stressed that Croatia's security system worked well. "I think there is no fear for Croatian citizens," he said. "We are part of NATO's security system and will know how to deal with threats such as this one carried out in Paris." He added, however, nobody is totally sure that they can prevent such things.

Twelve people were shot dead, including two police officers, by two masked gunmen in an attack on the offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris yesterday.

Rallies in support of the magazine were being held around the world today, including Croatia. The support drives were organised by the European Grassroots Antiracist Movement, including its member, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, in Zagreb. Two rallies were scheduled in the Croatian capital today, at French Republic Square at 3pm, and in the central Josip Jelacic Square at 7pm.
