The 85% of this cross-border project was covered by nonrepayable funds provided by the European Union.
During the project, which was launched on 1 March 2014 and is nearing its completion, silt accumulated in the backwaters has been removed so as to enable waters to flow again in the concerned areas.
This has been seen as a precondition for the continuation of life in some 20 backwaters of the River Drava in the said area, the environmentalist added.
The Kopacki Rit wetland is the biggest ornithological reserve in this part of Europe, and there are 44 fish species in the Drava backwaters in the area covered by the project.
