BRUSSELS, Nov 3
(Hina) - The European Commission hasn't opened a
formal investigation into alleged unlawful state subsidies to the
Zagreb-based Dinamo footbal club and is in touch with Croatia's
authorities regarding this issue, according to the spokesman for the
Commission's directorate-general for competition, Ricardo Cardoso.
"The Commission is in contact with the Croatian authorities. No formal investigation has been yet opened," Cardoso told Hina on Monday after Croatian media reported that the European Commission has launched a probe into the disbursement of funds for Dinamo from the purse of the City of Zagreb.
The amount of 244 million kuna has been paid into Dinamo's budget over the recent years, which is several times higher than the funding of Dinamo's peers in the Croatian premier league.
The European Union applies strict rules regulating state subsidies and breaches of those rules entail the return of illegally obtained grants.
