Bosnia general elections bring change, challenges stay same

Author: half
SARAJEVO, Oct 13 (Hina) - The results of Sunday's general elections have changed the power balance in Bosnia and Herzegovina but the country remains faced with the same challenges and any new government will have to show very quickly if it can handle them, local media said on Monday.

The Sarajevo-based Oslobodjenje daily said on its front page the biggest winners were the Bosniak Party of Democratic Action (SDA) and the Croat HDZ BiH.

The daily labelled the recently formed Democratic Front as another winner. Its president, Zeljko Komsic, said he was satisfied with the result because the party could be the second strongest in the Croat-Bosniak Federation entity.

The most obvious loser, according to Oslobodjenje, is the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Dnevni Avaz daily maintains the same, saying the party's president has announced his resignation following the electoral defeat.

Dnevni Avaz reported that the winners were the SDA and the Alliance for a Better Future (SBB), although its president, Fahrudin Radoncic, lost to Bakir Izetbegovic in the race for the Bosniak member of the state leadership.

The daily quoted Radoncic as saying that it would eventually transpire that the SBB and the DF had won more votes than the SDA and the SDP, implying the existence of a coalition which was only speculated on. "This means that citizens have opted for change after all," he was quoted as saying, accusing the Islamic community in Bosnia and Herzegovina of "having undoubtedly helped the SDA."

Dnevni Avaz said in its editorial that "nobody has reason to celebrate," especially bearing in mind the dissatisfaction smouldering among people and which erupted in riots last February.

If the parties which won the most votes don't realise the seriousness of the situation and citizens' messages, the events of February will be like a picnic compared to what lies ahead, editor-in-chief Fruk Vele said.
