Croatian mandarins distributed outside European Parliament

Author: half
BRUSSELS, Oct 7 (Hina) - Southern Croatia's Dubrovnik-Neretva County, its development agency and Croatian member of the European Parliament Dubravka Suica organised the distribution of mandarins from the Neretva river valley outside the EP on Tuesday to warn about the problems faced by producers because of a Russian embargo on fruit and vegetable imports from the European Union.

Numerous European producers, including Croatia's, have found themselves in trouble after Russia imposed the embargo in response to EU sanctions against Moscow.

Half of Croatia's mandarins were exported to Russia, making the embargo a big blow to domestic producers.

The European Commission last week adopted a new regulation on emergency measures for fruit and vegetables against the background of the Russian ban, worth 165 million euros. For each member-state, quantities were calculated on the basis of a three-year average export of certain products to Russia, with maximum quantities allowed having been calculated as well.

Croatia is to receive aid for a maximum quantity of 1,050 tonnes of apples and 7,900 tonnes of mandarins. Aside from that, each member-state has been allocated aid for a maximum 3,000 tonnes of one or more products covered by the emergency measures (tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, peppers, cauliflower and broccoli, salad cucumbers, apples, pears, plums, berries, grapes, kiwi, sweet oranges, clementines, mandarins, etc.)
