Father's Day: Over 39,000 fathers have taken paternity leave since its introduction

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, 19 March (Hina) – Since the introduction of paternity leave in August 2022, a total of 39,079 Croatian fathers have taken advantage of this entitlement by 2024, with more than 1,500 currently using it, the Ministry of Demography and Immigration stated on Wednesday to mark Father's Day.

"Father’s Day is an opportunity to further raise awareness of the important role fathers play in children's upbringing and to promote equal parenting," Minister of Demography and Immigration Ivan Šipić said, adding that creating a supportive environment for families is a key task of his ministry.

"Paternity and parental leave for fathers are essential components of this environment. As both a father and a minister, I encourage fathers to exercise their rights and use this time to strengthen their bond with their children, building quality relationships from an early age," the minister said.

The Ministry extended its best wishes for Father’s Day to all fathers.

Paternity leave extended from 10 to 20 working days as of 1 March

Amendments to the Maternity and Parental Benefits Act, which came into force on 1 March this year, have extended paternity leave from 10 to 20 working days for the birth of one child and from 20 to 30 working days for the birth of twins or multiple children.

Paternity leave is a non-transferable right of the father and must be taken within the first six months of the child's life to foster early bonding between father and child, the Ministry said, noting that fathers receive full pay during paternity leave, which is covered by the state.

Parental leave is a right for both parents. Up to the child's first birthday, parental leave is equally divided between parents on a four-month basis – four months for the father and four months for the mother. One parent can transfer up to two months of their entitlement to the other. The remaining non-transferable portion of parental leave can be used by fathers until the child reaches the age of eight, the Ministry stated.

As of 1 March, the allowance for parental leave, lasting six months if used by one parent or eight months if used by both, has been increased to a maximum of €3,001.79, up from the previous €995.45, according to the Ministry.

Father's Day in Croatia is celebrated on 19 March, the feast day of Saint Joseph, the patron saint of fathers, families and Croatia.
