Nebojša Slijepčević's "Man Who Could Not Remain Silent" nominated for Oscar

Author: Hari Alfeo

ZAGREB, 23 Jan (Hina) - The film "The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent" by director Nebojša Slijepčević has been nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Live Action Short Film.

This is the first nomination of a Croatian film for the prestigious award since Croatia's independence, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC) said on Thursday.

With this nomination, Slijepčević and the entire film crew "have inscribed Croatia in golden letters into the history of world cinema," said HAVC director Chris Marcich. "The members of the Academy recognised the strong and distinctive authorial style, as well as the significance of the subject matter addressed in Slijepčević's film."

"The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent" qualified for the Oscar nomination thanks to the Palme d'Or it won at Cannes, as well as the Grand Prix it received at the Melbourne International Film Festival, and its inclusion in the selection for the Manhattan Short Film Festival.

A total of 180 films worldwide were eligible to compete for a nomination in the category of live-action short film.

Slijepčević's film also won the European Film Award for Best Short Film and has been screened at over 80 festivals worldwide.

The Academy Awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on 3 March.
