Librarian and Croatian activist named best librarian in Serbia for 2024

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, 8 Jan (Hina) - Bernadica Ivanković, a library advisor for the Croatian language at the Subotica City Library and an activist of the ethnic Croat community, has been awarded the "Best Librarian of Serbia" award for 2024, with her nomination having been supported by numerous libraries from Croatia.

Ivanković was awarded by the Association of Librarians of Serbia (BDS), among other things, for her "uncompromising work in connecting and collaborating with colleagues from the region", as reported by the Croatian-language program of Radio-Television of Vojvodina (RTV).

Ivanković expressed her satisfaction and gratitude for the recognition of her 15 years of work in librarianship, emphasising that it is particularly significant for her that she is the only librarian responsible for Croatian language programmes and books to have received this prestigious Serbian professional award.

"It has been noticed that I nurture a minority language, minority heritage, and literature, which might be less present and harder to access," said the award winner, highlighting that her greatest achievements are the ties between librarians and libraries in the region, established through professional gatherings or direct contacts.

Ivanković is also the head of the association "Hrvatska čitaonica", which organises the most significant events in the field of Croatian literature in Serbia, such as Croatian Book and Word Days - Balint Vujkov Days, and the Ethno Camp. She has also initiated and implemented many programmes and quizzes aimed at encouraging reading among young people.
