Sevdalinka inscribed on UNESCO's world list of intangible cultural heritage

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, 4 Dec (Hina) - UNESCO has inscribed the traditional Bosnian-Herzegovinian song sevdalinka on the list of the world's intangible cultural heritage, the Minister of Culture of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sanja Vlaisavljević, confirmed on Wednesday.

The inscription of sevdalinka on the list of the world's intangible cultural heritage was part of the agenda of the session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is being held in Paraguay.

"The entire process lasted for years," Vlaisavljević told reporters in Sarajevo.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has previously succeeded in having other elements inscribed on UNESCO's list, including the Zmijanje embroidery, the Konjic woodcarving, the picking of iva grass (mountain germander) on Mt. Ozren, the grass mowing competition custom in Kupres, and, through a joint nomination, the breeding of Lipizzaner horses.

Professor Tamara Karača Beljak of the Sarajevo Academy of Music, who was involved in preparing the nomination for sevdalinka, recalled that extensive musicological and cultural research preceded the inscription.

The preparation of the nomination began back in 2012, following an initiative launched by the Association of Musical Artists from Tuzla.

"The nomination would not have been possible without the support of the performers of sevdalinka. Its inscription has opened many doors for us and demonstrated that other forms of traditional Bosnian-Herzegovinian music could also find their place on this representative UNESCO list," said Karača Beljak.
