Day of Međimurska popevka folk song observed

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, 29 Nov (Hina) - The Day of Međimurska Popevka, a folksong sung in the northern Croatian region of Međimurje, was observed on Thursday in memory of 28 November 2018, when it was included in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The observance is part of month-long events taking place in the city of Čakovec from 4 to 29 November to promote the importance  of this local tradition.

During the Month of Međimurska popevka, lectures, workshops, concerts and other events are held.

President Zoran Milanović attended the central ceremony of the Day of Međimurska Popevka.

The first sheet music for this genre dates back to the 16th century, and even though the popevka was historically predominantly a genre practiced by women, nowadays it is performed in various versions and occasions, and it is a part of the identity connecting all inhabitants of Međimurje.

The Međimurska popevka is also an element found in traditional regional dances.

It contains a feeling of authentic melancholy, characteristic of this region ensconced between two rivers, the Mura and the Drava.
