In Vukovar, a chapel in the Memorial Cemetery was today consecrated, and roses were placed at each grave of fallen defenders buried there.
On the eve of Vukovar and Škabrnja Remembrance Day, residents in cities and towns across Croatia light candles and lanterns in the centres of their communities or along streets named after Vukovar.
Wreath-laying ceremonies are being held for a few days in tribute to the victims from the 1991-1995 Homeland War.
This Sunday, requiem masses are being said in churches, too.
After the four-year occupation, Škabrnja and the nearby areas in the Dalmatian hinterland were liberated in August 1995 during Operation Storm, while Vukovar was reintegrated in the Croatian constitutional and legal system in January 1998 as part of the UN-monitored peaceful reintegration.
