Osijek has highest waste-sorting rate of all big Croatian cities

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, 5 Oct (Hina) - The eastern city of Osijek in 2023 had a waste sorting rate of 58%, which makes it the most successful big Croatian city in terms of waste sorting for the third consecutive year, Osijek Mayor Ivan Radić said on Saturday, citing data from the Economy Ministry.

The mayor noted that the city had already achieved the EU standard that envisages a 55% waste sorting rate, to be applied as of 2025.

"This is mostly owing to the residents of Osijek, who have been sorting waste conscientiously and responsibly, as well as owing to good infrastructure and education from an early age," Radić told a news conference at a local waste recycling plant.

He added that Osijek has four waste recycling plants and that this is sufficient considering its population size.

Radić said that this year again Osijek will not have to pay any penalties for insufficient waste sorting but will use the money, worth hundreds of thousands of euros, to build new infrastructure for waste management and for education about waste management.

"We are one of the few cities that has its own composting plant that makes high-quality compost, and we also have a mobile waste recycling plant and a facility for the disposal of construction waste," he said, noting that the city has the highest level of door-to-door waste sorting as well as recycling plants for 51 different types of waste.
