DSHV condemns statement by SNS coordinator in Tavankut, Serbia

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, 21 July (Hina) - The Democratic Alliance of Croats in Vojvodina (DSHV) has criticised the statement by the local coordinator of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in Tavankut in which she condemned the efforts by the Croat minority party to resolve the issue of water supply in this village in the northern Bačka region.

"The actions of the SNS coordinator in Tavankut, in the context of Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman's visit to the Croat community, were presented with a new wave of messages that are completely opposite to those that the Croats heard from Minister Radman and Serbian Minister Marko Đurić," the DSHV said on the social network X on Sunday.

A DSHV official has made several statements in recent days, including those to Croatian media and regional N1 television, complaining about the long-standing problem with the lack of water in the village, which, despite numerous announcements from higher levels of government, has not been resolved.

The SNS coordinator in Tavankut, Anđela Moravčić, condemned such statements as tendentious and untrue, stressing that the Subotica-Tavankut water pipeline project was under preparation.

The DSHV negatively assessed her message, saying that it was contrary to their cooperation with the ruling party at the state and regional levels. It is also contrary to the joint position of the two countries on the need to improve the status of the Croat minority in Serbia and the Serb minority in Croatia, as expressed by the foreign ministers of Serbia and Croatia at their meeting in Novi Sad on Friday, it added.

The DSHV noted that the messages from Ms Moravčić were not isolated outbursts of antagonism towards the Croats.

"This young woman recently called the Croats a 'mentally ill group of people'. She told the local Croats to 'pack up and go to (Croatia)', and said that 'there is no worse evil than you that has ever walked this earth.'"

"Does this message also apply to the guests from Croatia who were received by Minister Đurić?" the DSHV wondered.

The Croat minority party has repeatedly warned that it has trouble establishing cooperation with local activists of the SNS, with which, on the other hand, it has developed partnership relations at the state and regional levels.
