The gold medal was won by Val Karan, a junior student of the "XV. Gimnazija" in Zagreb, while Ilan Mihelja and Petar Jukić, senior students of the same secondary school, won bronzes. Also participating were Karlo Ahel, a junior student of the "Gimnazija Andrije Mohorovičića" in Rijeka, and Borna Jelečki, a senior student of the Ruđer Bošković Technical School in Zagreb.
About 200 students from 55 countries participated in the largest European competition, and in addition to European teams, teams from other continents also participated.
The five-member Croatian team was led to the European Physics Olympiad by Damir Pajić and Dario Barišić from the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb. The selection and preparation of the Croatian team and the participation of students in the Olympiad are organised by the Faculty of Science.
Participation in the Olympics is financed by the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth.
The five-member Croatian team was selected from among the students placed in the first half of the rankings at the state physics competition in 2023, organised by the Education and Teacher Training Agency. About 30 students were invited to the preparations and tests that took place from December to May at the Physics Department of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb.
At the recent Physics Cup 2024 international competition, Croatian students also achieved excellent results: Val Karan ranked first, while Ilan Mihelja and Ivan Hegedić ranked third.
