In 2024, two million euros will be set aside from the state budget for the project to enable pension recipients and citizens above 65 to travel by train free of charge.
The ministry of transport and infrastructure is tasked with implementing this pilot project.
An estimated 1.2 million pensioners and citizens above 65 will be able to enjoy free train rides throughout Croatia in the whole of 2024.
Split-Dalmatia County will cover the cost of the issuance of smart cards, which cost €2.65, for senior citizens who will use them for free rides by train.
In this county, there are about 160,000 pensioners.
Ukić also spoke about the procurement of six new trains to connect Zagreb and Split, which are expected to be included in the transport network in 2026.
The new trains will shorten travel time between the two biggest Croatian cities to 4.5 hours.
