KBC Zagreb marks 50th anniversary of its transplant programme

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, 15 Dec (Hina) - The KBC Zagreb hospital on Friday officially marked the 50th anniversary of its transplant programme, including 50 years since the first kidney transplant, 35 years since the first heart transplant, 34 years since the first liver transplant and three years since the first lung transplant.

KBZ Zagreb director Ante Ćorušić said the hospital was one of the five transplant institutions in Croatia, unique for the transplantation of all solid organs, including in children.

We also perform transplantations when indicated as well as simultaneous transplantation on the same patient, Ćorušić said.

"Our country is among the leading ones in Europe and the world in terms of the number of organ donors per one million inhabitants and in terms of the number of patients with transplants per one million inhabitants. KBC Zagreb is on a par with the best and most famous transplant centres in terms of the patient survival rate and transplant survival rate," said Željko Reiner, envoy for the Parliament Speaker.

The head of the KBC Zagreb urology department, Željko Kaštelan, said that that clinic had so far performed 2,280 kidney transplants, with the current number of kidney transplants annually being around 50.

The five-year organ survival is above 90%, as is the patient survival rate, which is on a par with globally relevant transplant centres, he said.
