137 adoptions completed in Croatia so far this year

Author: Lana Lončarić

ZAGREB, 9 Nov (Hina) - There have been 137 adoptions in Croatia in 2023, which makes this year one of the two years with the largest number of adoptions in the past decade, it was said on Thursday, on the occasion of World Adoption Day during the visit of Family Minister Marin Piletić to the Adopta association.

According to the association's press release, last year saw a record high number of adoptions, 196.

The amendments to the Social Welfare Act which are to be passed at the end of next year are expected to contribute to a rise in the number of adoptions and better support for the adoption community, the press release says.

One of the initiatives for changes to the law that comes from Adopta concerns the expansion of the number of social services defined by the law, including a school for adoptive parents. This way, Adopta and other providers of these services, in addition to our Family Centre, which operates in all counties, will be able to contract this social service with the Ministry, said Family and Social Policy Minister Piletić.

Adopta believes that the state's care for adopted children should not end with their adoption.

It is important to look at what other forms of support we can provide to adoptive parents and their children and young people, but also to potential adopters on their way to adoption, said Dubravka Marušić, the executive director of Adopta.

A total of 960 potential adopters are registered in the Register of Prospective Adopters, and there are currently 188 children in Croatia who meet the criteria for adoption.
