Kindergarten in Tavankut to be built with Croatia's support

Author: Marija Šestan;Lana Lončarić

ZAGREB, 2 Oct (Hina) -  A foundation stone-laying ceremony for a kindergarten where education will be in Croatian, was held in Tavankut, Vojvodina, on Monday, and the facility in this northern Serbian province is a part of a €960,000 project which is being financially supported by Croatia.

The entire project envisages the construction of this kindergarten as well as the renovation and equipment of two more kindergartens with education in Croatian in Subotica, and was financed as part of Croatia's special support programme for education in the Croatian language in Serbia.

Croatian Education Minister Radovan Fuchs described this as active support of the government in Zagreb to countrymen in Serbia.

Minister Fuchs and Croatian National Council (HNV) president Jasna Vojnić planted a tree in front of the kindergarten, which, they said, will symbolise the capital project of the Croatian government, called "Grow where you are planted", as the beginning of a new period in the life of the ethnic Croatian community in Serbia.

The Croatian government has the understanding, desire and willingness to help Croats in Serbia and recognises this as one of the key elements of its policy, Minister Fuchs said after the ceremony in Tavankut.

Underscoring that he sees positive developments in education in the Croatian language, the minister said that the Croatian government would continue to advocate the construction of the Croatian School Centre in Subotica, which is awaiting the decision of the City of Subotica, and student scholarships.

Vojnić said that the whole project includes the construction and renovation of three kindergartens with a complete programme in the Croatian language, and in a symbolic sense new visible support of the motherland to our community, she added.

Kindergartens in Subotica with education in Croatian are part of the educational system of the Croatian community, which includes over 1,000 children and students in five primary and three secondary schools.

Part of that system is also the Department of the Croatian language at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad.
