Tree-planting drive organised on Mount Mosor

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, 2 Oct (Hina) - A tree-planting drive was organised on Mount Mosor, overlooking Split, at the weekend, involving students and scouts from Split and scouts from Montenegro and North Macedonia, the Croatian Scout Association said on Sunday.

It was the second such drive, known as Boranka, to take place this year in the part of the mountain that had been burnt by wildfires.

The Boranka campaign has been organised for six years now, involving over 10,000 volunteers. This year it has started to be used as a model for reforestation in North Macedonia and Montenegro.

The president of the Montenegrin Scout Association, Peko Vukadinović, said that like Croatia, Montenegro too has to cope with wildfires that destroy its natural resources and affect its environment.

"We have come here to see for ourselves how this is working on the ground.  We will use this knowledge and idea to start this brilliant activity in our country as well in order to reforest our fire-burnt areas," Vukadinović said, thanking the Croatian Scout Association and the organisers for their hospitality and assistance.

In the previous five Boranka drives, over 100,000 tree saplings have been planted in fire-burnt areas. This initiative won the European Citizen's Prize 2022, which is awarded by the European Parliament for promoting European values and unity.
