Google supports road safety project for children involving Croatian experts

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, 29 Sept (Hina) - Google's philanthropic subsidiary Google.org has agreed to fund a $2 million project proposal to ensure safer travel to school for children, and the Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) and the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences (FPZ) participate in the project.

Using artificial intelligence, satellite imagery and Google Street View to detect road safety risks, the head of an international consortium, the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), will assess the road infrastructure around schools for the entire country in Vietnam and support upgrades on the roads at the highest risk.

Professor Siniša Šegvić from FER said that the proposal is included among 15 projects to be financed under the Google AI for Global Goals programme. He added that the project is a global undertaking involving iRAP, FER, FPZ, the Australian company Anditi and the Asian Injury Prevention Foundation.

He noted that traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among the working-age population, in which over a million people die every year.

The mortality rate among children presents a particular social problem. Every day around 500 children die on their way to school. In Vietnam, traffic accidents cause about 50 per cent of adolescent deaths, Šegvić said and added that iRAP has been developing a methodology for many years to facilitate the identification of the most dangerous segments of the traffic network.

Our research will make this methodology more accessible by applying artificial intelligence methods, Šegvić said.
