"Safe Tourist Destination 2023" project formally opened

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, 18 July (Hina) - Interior Minister Davor Božinović said on Monday that Croatia is one of the safest countries in Europe.

"Croatia is one of the safest European countries. This is not only something that we are proud of, this is also an obligation because we need to work on security and safety every day," Božinović said after the opening of the project "Safe Tourist Destination 2023" in the coastal city of Šibenik.

The project was launched in 2006 to increase the security of foreign tourists with joint patrols of Croatian and foreign police officers in coastal counties and Zagreb. They will be deployed in areas where large numbers of foreign tourists are expected.

This year, 22 police organisations from 19 countries are involved in the project with a total of 100 police officers. The Netherlands is participating for the first time and its officers will be deployed to Istria County.

Speaking in the presence of representatives of the 19 participating countries, Božinović said that this project is globally recognised.

"We know that when deciding on a holiday destination, in addition to natural beauties people choose where they will feel safe. European statistics show that Croatia is one of the safest countries in Europe," the interior minister said.

"I am pleased that foreign tourists feel safe in Croatia with their police officers at hand. Their very presence increases their feeling of security because they can speak to police officers in their own language," he added.

The opening ceremony was also attended by national chief of police Nikola Milina and Croatian Tourist Board director Kristjan Staničić.
