Coronation of King Charles III celebrated in Osijek

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, 6 May (Hina) - The main celebration in Croatia of the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla of the United Kingdom took place at the Archaeological Museum in the eastern city of Osijek on Saturday, with the British ambassador attending.

King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla were crowned at a ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday.

Osijek was among 280 cities in the world celebrating the coronation of the new British monarch.

British Ambassador Simon Thomas said that Osijek had made a deep impression on the King and Queen during their visit in 2016, when the city was part of their itinerary in Croatia.

Many people here have fond memories of the meeting with the King, and it was nice indeed to share the moment of the coronation with them, the ambassador said.

Mayor Ivan Radić said it was a privilege that the celebration of the coronation took place in Osijek, recalling that King Charles is bound to the city by family ties. The King's grand-grandfather Francis, Duke of Teck was born in Osijek, he noted.

Radić said that during his visit to Osijek in 2016, King Charles visited the Archaeological Museum, spoke to local residents, tasted produce from local family farms, and rode on the "Royal Tram". He said that the King and Queen had been granted a lifetime ticket for public transport in Osijek, expressing hope that they would use it some time in the future.

"I believe they were impressed by Osijek given that the Christmas greetings card for 2016 featured their photograph taken in Osijek," Radić said.

People in Osijek could watch the coronation ceremony on a large video wall. The "Royal Tram", in which the King and Queen rode during their visit seven years ago, was in service and all passengers could hear the story of the royal family and Francis, Duke of Teck.

The celebration programme started on Friday evening, when the pedestrian bridge across the River Drava was lit in the colours of the British flag, and the Union Jack was displayed on the Osijek University building.
