30th anniversary of Croatia's top-level national internet domain marked

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, 2 March (Hina) - The Croatian Academic and Research Network (CARNET) marked the 30th anniversary of the top-level national internet domain .hr on Thursday, presenting its projects for the digitalisation of the education system worth more than €330 million.

The top-level national domain is part of the national wealth and sovereignty of every country, CARNET's executives told the presentation, recalling that the formal recognition of Croatia in the internet space began on 27 February 1993 with the confirmation of the use of the new top-level .hr domain by the international organisation ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

Nearly 125,000 .hr domains

"In the last 30 years we have reached the figure of nearly 125,000 .hr domains. We have built the infrastructure, and we look after the security of the national domain space and users of the .hr domains," CARNET CEO Hrvoje Puljiz said. "Today we can proudly say that our national domain is one of the safest and most reliable in the European Union, strongly contributing to the identity of this country in the digital world," he added.

In addition, Croatia is the only European country where legal and natural persons can register one national domain for free, Puljiz noted.

CARNET participates in the digitalisation of enrolment in education institutions, the digital transformation of teaching and business processes in primary and secondary schools and universities, and in the development of computer networks. The total value of these projects exceeds €330 million, and they include over a million users in the education system (teachers, students and parents).
