Safety protocols being prepared for journalists in Croatia

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, 22 Nov (Hina) - The establishment of safety protocols whereby journalists could report threats they receive to the Interior Ministry is a great step forward, the president of the Croatian Journalists' Union and of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), Maja Sever, has told a round table discussion in Zagreb.

"The protocols are being negotiated, and all the elements are based on recommendations of the European Commission about safety of journalists," Sever told the round table held in Zagreb on Tuesday.

The enhancement of reporters in cooperation with the relevant institutions, including the ministries of the interior, cultures and media and justice is an attainable goal, said the unionist.

She also said that journalists' associations also request media outlets' owners to ensure means and mechanisms for the better protection of journalists.

Jasna Vaniček-Fila of the ministry of culture and media, said that protocols have been drawn up in cooperation wit the ministry of the interior and journalists' associations: the Croatian Journalists' Association (HND) and the Union (SNH).

She said that two protocols have been prepared concerning the protection and safety of journalists, one of them addressing the safety of journalists when they cover public assemblies and the other one for enabling them to report immediately threats when they receive them.

Interior Ministry officials said that these new procedures will enhance the safety of reporters.
