Lumblija cake 38th Croatian product whose name is protected in EU

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, 22 Nov (Hina) - Lumblija, a traditional cake from the island of Korčula, has been entered in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications, the European Commission said in the EU Official Journal on Tuesday.

The procedure to protect the product was launched by the Kumpanjija Blato Knights' Society and the Vela Luka Olive Growers Association.

Lumblija is a traditional cake of the island of Korčula, round in shape, obtained by baking leavened dough. It is dark brown on the outside, coated with varenik or brandy and sprinkled with sugar.

It is aromatic and has a characteristic and full nutty-fruity taste, which comes from the ingredients used for its preparation. Ingredients used to make Lumblija include smooth wheat flour, sugar, olive oil, lard or butter, varenik, almonds, walnuts, raisins, ground cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, anise, lemon and orange peel, vanilla sugar, brandy (rose or herb brandy), baker's yeast (fresh or dry), milk, water and salt from which the dough is made. Ground carob can be added when making the dough.

Croatia now has 38 agricultural and food products whose name is registered in the EU as a protected indication of origin or protected geographical indication, the Croatian Agriculture Ministry said.
