Annual Luka Ritz awards presented

Author: Vojo Micak

ZAGREB, 16 Nov (Hina) - Primary school student Karla Jančić and secondary school student Jan Filipović are this year's recipients of the Luka Ritz - Violence Is Not Courage awards for the promotion of human rights and prevention of peer violence.

The awards were presented to them by Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević and City Assembly Chairman Joško Klisović.

"I think that many victims of violence, either verbal or physical, do not tell their stories, and many do not even listen to them. That's why we should all act. We cannot expect society to change if we ourselves will not change," Jančić said at the award-giving ceremony in the City Assembly.

Filipović said that no form of violence can be the answer to wrongdoing. "No one should suffer any form of violence because, as Luka said, everyone has the right to breathe," he said.

Mayor Tomašević said that Jančić and Filipović "make Zagreb proud," adding that in these challenging times it was necessary more than ever to promote the universal values of human rights, tolerance and non-violence.

He said that 64 schools in the city were implementing the Civic Education pilot project which, among other things, raises awareness of peer violence and all forms of intolerance.

Klisović said that Luka Ritz had become the symbol of the fight against peer violence. "We must do all in our power to eradicate peer violence," he said.

The Luka Ritz awards have been presented since 2008 to commemorate Luka Ritz, who died at the age of 18 as a result of peer violence.
