This week's AMAN conference in Dubrovnik focused on sustainable development.
Hina and its director Branka-Gabriela Vojvodić took over AMAN's chairmanship from the Algerian APS news agency and its director Samir Gaid, while George Penintaex of Cyprus was reappointed AMAN's secretary general for another three years.
The adopted declaration obliges AMAN news agencies to increase reporting on sustainable development, with emphasis on the Mediterranean. The declaration says they will not only report on those topics but encourage other actors, such as national and European politicians, to act as well as combat disinformation.
The media shape public discourse on climate change and have the power to push for change and influence habits, the declaration says.
AMAN also committed to making journalists cooperate more closely and increasing the number of joint educational seminars. Emphasis in reporting strategies will also be on disenfranchised persons and young people, the declaration says.
Two media awards were given at the AMAN General Assembly. Syrian journalist Mhd Imad Aldaghly of the SANA agency was awarded for best article, one on the archeological discovery of ancient Assyrian seals, while Spain's Miguel Calero of the EFE agency was awarded for best photo, one of the erupting volcano on La Palma island.
Next year AMAN will convene in Tunisia and in 2024 in Italy.
