According to the Institute of Lexicography, representatives of general encyclopedias from Bulgaria, Montenegro, Denmark, Georgia, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Slovakia and Sweden are discussing the role of encyclopedias in providing reliable and verified information on culture, art, science and the society, as well as in preserving national and cultural identity.
By fulfilling their basic goal -- providing access to reliable and verified information of general interest in the mother tongue -- encyclopedias can have an important role in the fights against disinformation, misinformation and fake news, the Institute said.
Therefore, it was said, it is extremely important to exchange experience of the current situation and the functioning model of national encyclopedias, especially given the rising amount of information from different sources.
Participants, the Institute of Lexicography said, will present their national encyclopedia projects and share their experience with many challenges.
The conference is organised by the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography, with the financial support of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
The first European and North Atlantic Encyclopedia Conference was held in Brussels in 2019, organised by the Great Norwegian Encyclopedia, the European Parliamentary Research Service, and the Mission of Norway to the European Union.
